An OPP constable was killed in the line of duty yesterday in Northern Ontario. Police said they were conducting an investigation in Hurst at about 1230 in the afternoon when Constable Taryn Bally died after being seriously injured. Police say he's been with the service for 2 1/2 years. A former Air Canada pilot charged in what's being described as a complex fraud and forgery investigation spanning years. Police allege 59-year-old Geoffrey Wall used a fake license to captain hundreds of flights during a lengthy career based out of Pearson. A deputy chief of Peel Police called it, quote, similar to a doctor that is licensed to practice family medicine but is doing brain surgery. He allegedly used fraudulent documents to misrepresent his qualifications. Bank of Canada set to make an interest rate announcement this morning after a turbulent period of economic data. Well, Canada is in a recession. The central bank doesn't seem phased. They're widely expected to deliver a fifth consecutive hold to its benchmark rate, which stands at 2.25%. By the way, the last couple of recessions we had, our interest rate was 0.25 or 0.5%. Hot country sports. The Stanley Cup final continues. Carolina beat Vegas 5-3, tying the series at 2. Blue Jays beat Philly 3-2. That home series wraps up at 7 tonight. Canada's women's soccer team defeated host Costa Rica in an international friendly yesterday. The NBA finals continues. The Knicks host San Antonio 8-30. New York leads 2-1. In the WNBA, the Toronto Tempo hosts Connecticut tonight at 7. And the Branford Bulldogs made history at the under-18 draft by selecting their first female ever. Goaltender Sophie Ivanovich was selected in the second round. Hot country weather.
