It's Friday, May the 15th, and I'm Rob Kerwain. Ontario Provincial Police say an investigation is underway at the Guelph Lake Conservation Area. Wellington County OPP were called to the scene around 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon to a weapons complaint. In an e-mail this morning, OPP confirmed it was a pellet gun involved and there is no threat to the public. No one was hurt. This morning, the area reopened at 6 A.m. with no alerts to the public. Police in Niagara have charged a mental health counselor following an investigation into an alleged assault at a specialized school facility in Welland. The Niagara Regional Police Service says its child abuse unit began investigating in April after concerns were raised about the use of restraint techniques on a child at the Mountain View Center for Innovative Learning located on Merrillville Highway in Welland. According to police, investigators determined a mental health counselor had allegedly used restraint techniques outside the scope of their training and that the actions amounted to excessive force. On Thursday, police say that 22-year-old Madison of Grimsby was charged with one count of assault. Former fashion mogul Peter Nygaard will likely hear the result of his appeal case today in relation to his sexual assault convictions and prison sentence. The 84-year-old was convicted of four counts of sexual assault in 2023 and sentenced to 11 years in prison. Nygaard's appeal argued his sentence was excessive and that the trial judge made several errors in law, including the admission of expert testimony on the effects of trauma. And in sports, the Montreal Canadiens are one win away from the NHL's Eastern Conference Final. The Habs thumped the Sabres 6-3 in Buffalo last night, thanks to four unanswered goals after the host held a 3-2 lead coming out of the first period. Montreal host Game 6 tomorrow night.
